Joy and Happiness: Understanding the Difference

We often use the words joy and happiness interchangeably, but I believe they represent two different experiences. Both are important, yet they serve different purposes in a meaningful life.

Joy is often connected to specific moments. It’s the feeling that comes from achieving a goal, celebrating with people you love, witnessing something beautiful, or experiencing an unexpected blessing. These moments bring energy, gratitude, and inspiration, reminding us to appreciate the good that surrounds us.

While joy is powerful, it is often temporary. Life naturally moves from one joyful moment to the next.

Happiness, however, is something deeper and more enduring.

To me, happiness isn’t simply an emotion—it’s the result of living in alignment with your purpose. It grows when your daily choices reflect your values, when your actions have meaning, and when you’re intentionally building a life that matters.

You won’t experience constant joy every day, and that’s perfectly normal. Challenges, setbacks, and difficult seasons are part of every journey. But even during those moments, it’s possible to experience a lasting sense of happiness because you know you’re moving in the direction of the life you’re meant to live.

Rather than chasing temporary moments of pleasure, strive to build a life filled with purpose. Let moments of joy encourage you along the way, while your deeper sense of purpose becomes the foundation for lasting happiness.

When purpose becomes your guide, happiness is no longer something you wait to find—it’s something you create through the way you choose to live each day.

To your happiness,

Brad Kofoed
